Oscar The Grouch!

American designer Oscar de la Renta has been making his opinion known in regards to the First Lady, Michelle Obama’s gown choice when she and President Barack Obama met with Chinese President Hu Jinato. First Lady wore a beautiful red gown with black detail designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen. Well Mr. de la Renta was none too happy. The color red is considered lucky in China. But because the purpose of the state dinner was to promote American-Chinese trade, Oscar didn’t think it was ok for her to wear a European designer.

He made a statement that he wasn’t talking about his clothes, says he’s old he doesn’t need it as much. Saying that there are young people who need it more. Thought: maybe he should make that same speech everytime someone important is wearing an Oscar de la Renta. I’m sure that the fact that he has dressed every first lady, but Michelle, has nothing to do with this rant. I say GET OVER IT Oscar. Because at this rate, you wont dress Michelle at all.

Bottom line is she looked amazing! Props to Sarah Burton for designing such an amazing gown. Michelle has been something like a fashion icon since Barack won the election. She always looks great!

Amoy Interview

I had the pleasure to interview hair stylist to the stars, Amoy. She talks about her start in the industry, being ask to style John Galliano’s hair and being mentored by industry legend, Odile Gilbert. She also talks about natural hair care and what trends to look for this season. Click here to read the full interview.

Amoy Interview

If you don’t know who Amoy is, you will soon. She is a hair stylist to the stars. Her clientele includes: Naomi Campbell, Alicia Keys, Sheryl Crow and Selita Ebanks to start with. She has also styled for fashion house Christian Dior! Amoy has made such a name for herself and has launched an AMAZING career, becoming a sought after hair stylist in the fashion industry.

She sets herself apart from all the rest with her hands on method she uses to develop her techniques.  Her first booking was the Christian Dior couture collection in 1998, she then styled John Galliano’s after which he began requesting her as his personal hairstylist. After that Donatella Versace came calling.

Amoy has graciously agreed to take time away from her busy schedule to answer some questions about hair care, celebrities and what this journey has been like for her.

Thank you, Amoy, for agreeing to do this interview for Fashion 24/7.

Amoy, you were mentored by Odile Gilbert, who is an award winning stylist and industry icon.  First, how did it come about you working with her? Second, what was it to work with someone of her caliber? I met Odile through a mutual friend. After a trial run, she hired for me a job for Vogue in the Hamptons. She loved my work and invited me to Paris to work with her during couture season. Working with her was so inspiring. She was easy-going and I felt that we were equals; no pretension or drama. She trusted you as hairstylist.

What was your first show in Paris like? Styling John Galliano’s hair for his final bow, were you nervous at all?

My first show was Christian Dior couture and it was a ‘20s inspired: finger waves and lacquered looks. My talent was immediately apparent, and I was able to work on two of the entertainers performing at the show. Word of my talent spread and John Galliano approached me to do HIS hair as well.  I was more excited than nervous when doing the work. After the look was completed, my nerves kicked in. After seeing the overwhelmingly press afterwards, I felt so good…and humbled.

Let me ask you about natural hair care. More and more women are choosing to go natural.  First, why do you think this is? And with there being so many products out there to choose from, which ones are the best for natural hair?

Right now, I think there is a certain backlash against fakeness, and for many women, weaves are seen as not being your true to yourself. And on a more basic level, there are economic considerations as well. Naturals are thought to be much less expensive to maintain. Along with the growing popularity of the natural, products have come along for the ride. One should always look for an alcohol-free product. Alcohol is so drying to hair, especially coarse hair. I am a fan of essential oils, including shea, grapeseed, and Moroccan. Products should be as nature-based as possible because those added chemicals tend to simply coat the cuticle and weigh the hair down.

Youtube will drive you crazy with everyone trying to tell you how to care for your natural hair. What are some natural hair care tips you can give my readers?

I tell my clients who maintain a natural to always make sure their scalp is clean and moisturized. A good scalp scrubbing not only offers relaxation, but also breaks down oils that can clump together and prohibit hair growth. Secondly, hair should be washed (with a moisturizing shampoo) and conditioned at least once a week. It is a myth that natural hair doesn’t have to be watched often; your hair and scalp should be clean. Lastly, as mentioned before, instead of using lots of products, essential oils should offer all the moisturizing your hair needs. Simply finish with a lightweight style serum, and your look is done.

Ok, Amoy, you have made quite a name for yourself, building a very impressive clientele list of some household names such as Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Kerry Washington and MJB just to name a few. What has it been like working with these big names?

Working with top celebrities and models has been a humbling experience because they have so many stylists they could choose from, and they keep coming back to me. However, I don’t get my professional life confused with my personal life. I realize that I am providing a service for these celebs, and I have to make sure not to cross any boundaries. And at the end of the day, my famous clients are as “normal” as my non-celeb clients. In my chair, they can let go of their daily issues, and relax.

I have been asked by a couple of friends of mine, how to care for bi-racial hair. It’s too coarse, too thick or too frizzy. What do you suggest they do? Are they certain products they can try?

Bi-racial hair can be difficult to tame; often, it is neither completely curly nor completely straight. When clients have that mixed texture, I recommend the Brazilian Blowout. It is a keratin (protein) treatment that straightens the hair, but still allows curls when you want them. It makes your texture consistent. In terms of products, I love the Mixed Chicks line. It is so moisturizing without being heavy.

Can you give us a preview of what trends to expect to see this season? What colors will be hot for the Spring/Summer season?

I think the ombre (darker on top, lighter on bottom) color will be big for spring.  And thanks to Rihanna, Crayola red will definitely be hot for spring. My assistant is currently rocking the color, and she looks fabulous. In terms of cuts, I love shaggy bobs. Frankly, any type of short cut is on my radar, especially sharp, Vidal Sassoon-inspired looks.

Why is it important for you to try out your styling techniques on yourself before you apply them on a client?

I like changing up my look often, so trying different styles on myself give me a chance to see what works (is it easy to maintain, wash, etc) and what doesn’t. And I get to  keep my own look fresh.

Now, one of your most sought after styles are extensions. Why do so many want extensions?

I love extensions. They allow you to protect your natural hair while at the same time experimenting with different colors, textures, and cuts. A properly laid extension should also allow your natural hair to grow even faster.

What techniques do you use for extensions? Or is it a well kept secret?

I have no secrets! LOL. I do several types of extensions, but the most popular (and the one I recommend) is sew-in extensions, by which I cornrow your natural hair and sew the weave onto the braids. No glue!

How long do you recommend someone keep extensions in?

I tell my clients to come in for a tightening after six weeks and to redo the extensions at 12 weeks. We only offer the best hair available, so you can reuse the hair for up to 3 different extension applications.

What are a just a few of your favorite must have on hand, products? Why?

My go-to products are the Rene Furterer Naturia dry shampoo, their Karite serum, and my own Amoy Couture Hair curly balm. I also need my Mason Pearson and Croc flat iron.

Amoy, you have had such a blessed journey thus far and I know you will continue on doing what you do. Can you tell my readers what this journey, so far, has been like?

Well, I am still on this journey! I have been so, so blessed, but have put in some hard work to get where I am. I have never compromised on my vision, and made sure to surround myself with people who have my best interest at heart. I am consistently humbled and I never take anything for granted. I still love coming to work every day, and I cannot WAIT to see what the future holds

Well, there you have it!  Again, thank you Amoy for taking time from your busy schedule.  It has truly been a pleasure.

Keep Me

I don’t know about you, but I cherish the days when I don’t have anything on the schedule. I can just sit back and relax and watch my favorite movie, Dirty Dancing. And what makes that even better, is something comfortable to relax in. Introducing Keep Me. Keep Me is a loungewear line designed by Ali Kay and DVF alum, Anne des Barres.

I just got mine and let me tell you, I LOVE the pieces I got. The fabric is so soft and better yet, you can move around in it! The pieces are super stylish, so you can run errands in them, if you choose too. I have a new love! Women often find it hard to be sexy and comfortable at the same time, but Keep Me will put an end to that. Keep Me embraces the sexiness and the comfort that women look for.

Keep Me has gotten the attention of celebrities such as Julie Benz, Autumn Reister and Jamie Lynn Sigler. The Spring 2011 look book is available for you to view on the website www.keepme.com.

I promise the moment you feel the fabric, you will fall in love like I did. Keep Me will make the perfect gift for someone special in your life or for yourself. When “lazy days” are far and few in between, little things like great movies and comfortable loungewear make them that much more special when we do actually find the time to have them.

OMG!!!

OMG! I love this dress. It is from the Blacky Dress collection, showing at Berlin’s Fashion Week. The short pleated dress was just one of my favorites from this collection. Although I was not crazy about this collection, there were definitely some pieces that I wouldn’t mind hanging in my closet. This dress along with a couple of other pieces added a little bit of color to the otherwise dark collection. There were leather pieces, cropped pants (which I hate).  Overall, the collection was ok, I mean it didn’t really speak volumes to me. With the exception of this piece and a couple of other pieces, I could have done without the rest of the Blacky Dress collection.

Celebrity Style

We are always looking to our favorite celebs for the latest in fashion, and this winter season is no different.  This season like the others, celebs looked like they were walking off the runways.  So, what hot trends are our dearly beloved celebrities wearing this winter season?

Well, since we are talking about the winter season it makes sense to talk about coats. This winter season a hot coat trend is the cape coat.  Celebrities are really feeling this coat. Who’s wearing this fab coat? Leona Lewis, Leighton Meester and my favorite Kim Kardashian just to name a few.  It is an easy transition from winter to spring and back again. You got to stay warm anyways, why not look good doing it-multi tasking. How are the fab one’s wearing their cape coats? These coats can easily be paired with a nice pair of skinny jeans, and platform pumps.

Boots are another hot winter celebrity trend for 2011. Heels of all height are popping up in photographs everywhere. And they look great! Knee high, thigh high, ankle or flats whatever your preference is. Even the UGG boot, which is almost a staple in the shoe world! Here’s why. This boot goes from winter to spring to summer to fall and back again, and depending how you pair them, you can pull the look flawlessly. Here are a few pics of your favorite celebs rocking in their UGG’s.

Fur is hot this winter, however it’s worn. And celebrities can’t get enough of it. Whether it’s a full fur coat or a trim on the collar. Even though they are a lot of people who would prefer celebs to either wear faux fur or no fur at all, that is not stopping them. Fur was all over the runways. And celebs are showing no signs of letting this trend go. Check out a few pics of exactly how certain celebrities are wearing fur for this winter season.

These are just a few trends that celebrities are following in 2011. Whether it be these or any other trend that you decide to follow, make sure you wear it loud and proud. Confidence is also hot this season and every other season.

First Lady Michelle Obama Rocks It Out In Alexander McQueen

Even though the purpose of Wednesday’s state dinner at the White House was the relationship between the U.S and China. All eyes were definitely on First Lady, Michelle Obama. When I say all, I mean all. Everyone from big time fashion blogs to twitter was talking about out gorgeous First Lady.

She wore a bright red, silk organza gown, with an asymmetrical neckline and black detail that was designed by Alexander McQueen creative designer, Sarah Burton.

The dress was beautiful. Very glamorous. Which I believe to be Michelle’s style. I loved the asymmetrical neckline.  I love Alexander McQueen!

The color choice was obviously in honor of China. It is a symbol of good luck there.

Maria Caro Commits Suicide Months After Daughter's Death

Maria Caro, the mother of the late Anorexic model Isabelle Caro, has committed suicide. She had been plagued with tremendous guilt over the death of her daughter in November of last year, according to her husband Christian Caro.

Media coverage over her daughter’s death had begun to take its toll.

Isabelle Caro was known for her provocative, nude anti-anorexic campaign in 2007. She weighed just 68 pounds at the time. Even though the message was anti-anorexia, she was also featured on a number of pro-anorexia websites as positive example of how to be thin.

Isabelle had stated that her anorexia started at just 13 years old and was due in part to her mother’s reluctance to see her grow up. In an interview with CBS news, she said her mother “spent her time measuring my height. She wouldn’t let me go outside because she heard fresh air makes children grow.”

According to Christian Caro, who was Isabelle’s stepfather, Maria took her to the hospital in November despite the fact the Isabelle didn’t want to go. It was during this hospitalization that Isabelle died. Christian claims it was medical neglect that led to the death of his stepdaughter.

Feature : Modahnik

If you have always been fascinated with the beautiful bright, bold colors of Africa, then I have something for you. Modahnik is a women’s contemporary clothing line that shows off the rich colors and textures of Africa with a 70’s twist.  The brightly color print is the signature of the collection.

Kahindo Mateene, the creator and owner of this collection, got her inspiration through her life and travel in different African countries as a child, paired along with seeing her mother in African print dresses in the 70’s and 80’s. After graduating with honors here in the states, and being apart of corporate America, in 2002 Kahindo enrolled at Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago in the Fashion Design program.  She learned the fashion industry through her education and real life experiences working in a Showroom as a Sears’s rep, through her Fashion Design internship and at a leading women’s retailer. All these things came together to gave Kahindo the tools she needed to become a fashion designer and launch her own clothing line.

Besides the bright, beautiful, bold prints, something else that makes this collection special is the fact that it is produced in Africa, using the fair trade practices and creating jobs for the underprivileged communities within Africa.

This line represents the confident modern woman, who isn’t afraid of bold color. She is a risk taker. She is chic, feminine and sexy in her own right. This is the vision of Kahindo.

Below are some photos from the Spring/Summer 2011 collection:
